Help / Information

Frequently asked.

What people ask before they buy a piece, commission one, or come to the bench. Anything not here? Send a note.

01 What can I buy ready to wear, and what is made to order?

Seven bracelets are finished and sitting on the shelf. They ship within 2 working days and each one is the only one of itself, so when it sells it is gone. Five pieces are built after you order them: the Mix and Match Design from $15, Design Your Own Bracelet from $19, Earrings from $22, Necklace from $38, and the Stacking Set of Two or Three from $45. Those are strung to your measurement and leave within 5 working days of payment clearing.

02 Can I put more than one stone in a bracelet?

Yes. The Mix and Match Design takes up to three of the twenty stones in one strand, from $15. You also choose how they sit: Alternating runs them one after another, Blocks keeps each colour together, One as the accent gives you a body colour with the others dropped in as single beads, Drift fades one into the next, and Scattered has no pattern at all. Three stones adds $3, and two of the five arrangements add $2.

03 What if I cannot decide which stones?

Hand it to the bench. Tell us which colour families you like, cool or warm or earth or dark or pale or jewel, and we choose the stones, the order and the spacing. You get something you would not have picked yourself, made by someone who has handled all twenty. No two come out the same.

04 Will my piece look exactly like the drawing on the page?

Close, but not identical, and that is the material rather than a fault. The drawing is built from photographs of the actual beads, so it shows you the colours and the arrangement honestly. Natural stone still varies bead to bead, which is why no two strands match. Indian agate, purple-blue jasper and sesame jasper change the most.

05 What size should I order, and how do I measure?

Wrap a strip of paper round your wrist, mark where it meets, measure the strip, and order that number. Do not add anything for ease. Bracelets are strung at 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5 and 8 inches. The first three carry no extra charge, 7.5 in adds a dollar and 8 in adds two. 7 in is the most common adult size and 6.5 in suits most children. There is a longer read at how to measure your wrist, and the measuring guide will work the size out for you.

06 What if it does not fit, or I change my mind?

If a piece built to the size you gave does not fit, send it back within 14 days and we restring it to a corrected size for the cost of postage alone, once. A finished piece bought as it is can go back within 14 days, unworn and as it arrived, and the price is refunded within 10 working days. A piece made to your specification cannot be sold to anyone else, so the usual right to change your mind does not apply once work has begun. The full position is in Refunds and Cancellations.

07 How much does a custom piece cost?

We quote every commission individually on materials, labour and timeline. As a guide: around $30 for small engraved pieces, $40 to $120 for embroidery, $85 to $400 for jewellery, $50 to $300 for laser-engraved wood, and $25 and up for 3D prints. Made-to-order beaded jewellery is priced on the page instead, starting at $15, with every option adding a figure you can see before you pay.

08 How do I start a commission?

Write to us at the contact form and say who it is for, what you have in mind, and when you need it ready. We answer within one business day with a written estimate. For anything complex we sketch a direction for approval before work begins. A deposit of half the agreed price books the place, and nothing starts before it clears.

09 How long does a commission take?

Engraving 5 to 10 business days, embroidery 7 to 12 business days, jewellery 2 to 4 weeks, 3D-printed parts 3 to 7 business days with prototypes faster, and art commissions 2 to 6 weeks. The clock starts when the deposit clears and we have everything we need from you, not when you first wrote. There is a fuller account at how long a custom piece takes.

10 Do you take rush orders?

Yes when the calendar allows. A rush is quoted with the timeline written out and there are no hidden surcharges. If a deadline cannot be met you will hear it up front rather than on the day.

11 Do you make wedding and bridal commissions?

Frequently. Engraved wedding bands in slate, ceremony signs, cake toppers, hand-embroidered handkerchiefs, anniversary boards and bridal party gifts are among the most requested. Book six weeks ahead or more for anything with a fixed date on it.

12 What materials do you work with?

Wood in walnut, oak, maple, cherry and reclaimed barn board. Leather, slate, brass and anodized aluminum. Sterling silver, copper and glass beads. Cotton, knit, terry and linen. PLA, PETG, resin and brass-fill filament for 3D printing. Twenty natural stones sit in trays on the bench for the beaded work.

13 Where is Crafily located?

The studio is just outside Hagerstown, Maryland. Exit 6B onto US-40 east and it is on your right, past the second light, with a free lot at the door. Post goes to P.O. Box 1, Hagerstown, MD 21741. We serve Washington County, Frederick County in Maryland, Franklin County in Pennsylvania and the West Virginia Eastern Panhandle within about 25 miles, and we ship across the continental US.

14 What are your walk-in hours?

Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, 1:00p to 4:00p. Closed Sunday. Other days by appointment: send a note and we will set a time. Come and handle the stones before you choose, because they all look different in the hand than on a screen.

15 Do you offer workshops for kids?

Yes. The Saturday family session runs 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., drop in, for children from age four with an adult. It is $25 a child and $35 an adult, and you take home what you made. Loom and beads suits seven and up, jewellery fundamentals is for adults and older teens, and any workshop can be booked privately for groups of 4 to 14.

16 Do you ship outside Maryland?

Yes, across the continental US. Shipping is calculated at checkout from the address you give, before you pay. Jewellery goes in a box with the knot protected, engraved wood and slate travel between rigid boards, and nothing is posted in a bare envelope. You can also collect from the bench on a Wednesday or Saturday afternoon with no postage to pay. The detail is in Shipping and Delivery.

17 Where do I find your policies?

All of them sit along the bottom of every page: Privacy, Terms of Use, Commission Terms, Copyright and Image Use, Refunds and Cancellations, Shipping and Delivery, Supporting the Work, Accessibility and Cookies.

18 How do you look after a stone bracelet?

Take it off before you shower, swim, cook with oil or put on perfume, and wipe it with a dry cloth rather than washing it. Soap, chlorine, oil and scent do more damage than water. Lava rock is porous and takes up whatever it meets, which some people do on purpose. When the elastic eventually goes, keep the beads and write to us. There is a longer guide at caring for a natural stone bracelet.
